An international symposium open to the public has been held annually since 2015. It includes presentations and a panel discussion by Japanese art specialists from both Japan and abroad. At the fifth symposium, “The Arts of Japan in a Global Context: Beyond Orientalism and Occidentalism”. Exhibitions of Japanese art in Europe, North America, and Japan often isolate Japan from other countries. We discussed how we should understand and discuss Japanese art in museums.
